SYSTEMS, DETAILS AND DRAWINGS- TEXTILE MUSEUM IN PAITHAN

Updated: Apr 20, 2022

DESIGN INTENTION AND CONCEPT

Museums are large exhibits built with the intention of narrating a story of the objects that are exhibited. Its a place for the conservation of the object's journey and identity.

The intent thus was to first identify what importance does a hand-loomed textile own. What are its properties and its behavior? The thinness and lightness of textile were the quality that had the ability to be inculcated in the built. So that one would not be overpowered by the built around and could immerse in the actual contents of the exhibit.

The folding and weave of textile inspired the way in which building was planned. Concrete as a material has the ability and adaptability to be molded in thin forms.

Along with this the climate and location context becomes an important factor that influences the build and its form. Paithan is a hot and dry region. Traditionally, the region demands thicker masses of building. It was important to increase the thermal massing of spaces that were on the edges. The technique of concrete cavity walls was thus used to ensure thermal massing. The orientation is also such that hot winds from the north are avoided and the exhibit areas are away from it to save them from heat.

These are some of the conceptual sections of how would one move through the spaces and the strategies that would be incorporated for creating different experiences as one moves through the space. The concrete planes act as one whole thin mass which staggers and intersects with each other.

INITIAL DESIGN PLANS

The initial plans were about including the experience of the trees, their foliage, and their presence on the site. A courtyard around the tree would enhance the interaction between people and act as a resting space as well.

The main entrance is from the southwest direction so that one can enjoy and experience the winds from the Nath Sagar river.

When one is walking the stairs the only thing that can be seen is the foliage of the courtyard tree which enriches the experience while walking further up. The cantilevered stairs invoke the feeling of the body being suspended on various levels.

The intention was to weave into the landscape breaking the division between the interior and exterior.
