Initially we started thinking of all the parameters together, that of the weave, the lightness/elevation. Considering the material was brick which is usually a material in compression we had to go again through some fundamentals of construction with brick, or brick masonry etc.
On referring to architects’ work like Achyut Kanvinde, Louis Kahn, Laurie Baker, Peter Riche, we saw patterns in the way the brick was used. Drawing from our observations of all these we started by making some connections between the bricks that would solve the problems of the parameters given. We were making our own brick bonds with a standard brick size to understand the weave. We concluded with a note that the brick “jaalis” is a type of a weave, we’re there is a staggering and layering of the material as well as the material forces.
The site constraints then decided the scale of the pavilion we were going to build. We diagramed in plan in order to change the axis of the grid and to let it appear light.
However the issue still remained if the columns were stable and would they be able to load the roof.
We were thus trying and iterating different possibilities to resolve the stability, lightness, and the arrangement structure.
